Hana trailed behind the bear, her footsteps light but urgent against the cold hospital floors. Soon, the hospital’s fluorescent lights faded behind them as the automatic doors whooshed open, spilling them into the night. The woods stood waiting, dark and alive.
Her hands shook as she pulled out her phone and dialed Peter, a seasoned animal expert and longtime friend. He picked up quickly, his voice steady. “Hana, what’s happening?” She didn’t sugarcoat it. “A bear brought me into the woods. It’s got something with it—I can’t leave it.” The line went quiet, the weight of her words settling. She felt his concern sharpen, but her mind was made up.
