“You’re okay now, little guy,” Hana whispered, gently setting the rescued creature into the soft nest she’d made from her sweater. She moved quickly, preparing a space for the others as Peter continued lifting them out. Each arrival brought another surge of relief.

At long last, Peter surfaced, lowering the final creature into Hana’s waiting arms. Five of them, small and strange, blinked up at their rescuers with wide, curious eyes. The humans exchanged a glance—wordless, overwhelmed. They could each carry two. But that left one behind. The smallest sat alone, trembling. The question loomed in the silence: who—or what—would carry the last?
