All eyes had shifted. For a moment, the ceremony no longer belonged to Emma and Marcus. The string quartet hesitated, their bows frozen mid-air, unsure whether to continue. The music thinned, then stopped altogether. Emma turned her head, her fingers still laced with Marcus’s, while he stood motionless beside her.
Halfway through a sentence, the officiant lost his place and blinked at the animal standing squarely in the aisle.
