As Mueller took more pictures of the underwater planes, she focused on evidence she believed could help historians identify the aircraft. Still, as incredible as the images were, the photographer could not shake the feeling that something was wrong with the underwater graveyard. “Seeing planes underwater is strange, planes don’t belong in the water, they belong in the sky, so it feels weird to dive on them. But amazing and special, too,” Mueller later recalled.
Before returning to the surface, Mueller counted more than 150 airplanes in the underwater graveyard. Thankfully, landside, Mueller’s images would help historians uncover the strange truth of the long-lost airplanes.
