Not all red carpet photos age gracefully, and the 2015 Academy Awards gave us one of the most viral examples. While greeting stars, John Travolta leaned in to kiss Scarlett Johansson on the cheek, but the picture captured looked far from sweet. With an awkward tummy grab and Scarlett’s unmistakable side-eye, the snap quickly spread across the internet as a meme-worthy moment.
What many missed, though, was Scarlett speaking up soon after, calling it “an unfortunate still-frame from a live-action encounter that was very sweet and totally welcome.” Instead of feeding the frenzy, Scarlett chose to defend her colleague, reminding fans that not everything is what it seems.
