James Hormel and Michael Nguyen – Together Since 2006
These two have to be the most heartwarming couple on the list. James Hormel, heir to the Hormel Foods fortune, was a philanthropist and the first openly gay U.S. ambassador, serving in Luxembourg from 1999 to 2000. In 2006, at an Equality Forum dinner in Philadelphia, he met Michael Nguyen, a Swarthmore College sophomore, and their love story began.
The couple married in December 2014, with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi officiating. Together, they contributed to numerous causes, including a $4.3 million gift to establish the James Hormel and Michael Nguyen Intercultural Center at Swarthmore College in 2018. They were together until James passed away in 2021 at age 88.
