With cotton swabs in hand and many unanswered questions, Dr. Greene returned to Mrs. Thompson’s home. One by one, he carefully swabbed the cheeks of each puppy. To him, the 12 wiggling little mouths equaled 12 tiny mysteries. DNA testing in dogs doesn’t require blood or anything scary. A simple buccal swab—just a gentle swipe along the inside of the cheek—was enough.
The samples would be sent to the lab again, but this time, the whole litter would be included. Dr. Greene hoped the full picture would finally come into focus. Whatever was going on with these puppies, he wasn’t letting it go just yet.
