As Mueller learned through her research, Operation Rollup was the American military’s way of “dealing” with excess vehicles like cars, planes, and even tanks! After World War II, the United States government wanted a cheap way to get rid of these vehicles. As you might imagine, they deemed shipping them back across the Pacific too expensive.
So, as surprising as it might sound, the government decided to simply dump the vehicles off the Marshal Island, letting them sink to the bottom of the Pacific. That explains why the aircraft were in such excellent condition: they had never been flown!
